Review: Cinema visits

Alright it's been a while since I did some movie reviews. And since in the last 2 months, I've seen about 4 movies (with more coming up). So I thought let's review them and tell you what I thought about it.

The Host
Let's start out with the Host. A film made after Stephenie Mayer (yes, from the Twilight books) book, with the same name. I've read this book about 3 years ago, and all though I definitely forgot about some bits of it, the story really interested me. The trailer looked good and well.. After reading the books I had to go and see it, didn't I? But.. (here comes the 'but') I didn't impress as much as I hoped it would. It missed a lot of the story line which I loved in the book. And of course there was the love triangle again, yes it really does start to annoy me, and it just came out of nothing. There wasn't enough character building for me. And hearing Wanda's voice was a lot different then actually reading it. The movie was alright at some point as I really liked the look of the cave they stayed in. And the rumours of another part.. Why? I don't think that was necessary. Well let's just say, I thought the movie was okay for a lazy Sunday night, but not for the cinema.

For the people who don't know what I'm talking about, this is what the story is about:
When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.

Overall: 5.5/10

The Place Beyond the Pines
My boyfriend had been dying to see this movie, and well I pretty much enjoyed every other Ryan Gosling movie (not only because he's quite good looking), I just really like him as an actor. But this movie is a complete, yes this is the only word I can use for it, mindfuck. There's a lot happening and I do think Bradley Cooper did an amazing job as well. The storyline is very interesting and I kept on wondering what was going to happen. This movie has so much different storylines that you definitely have to keep your eyes open and pay attention. But I definitely think you should all go and see it!

The story:
A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.

Overall: 8/10

Iron Man 3
Out of these four, this was the movie I've been looking forward the most. I already told all of you that I really like Robert Downey Jr. And all though I did have high hopes, I still really enjoyed this movie. It was funny, epic and exciting! I would even say it might be the best out of the 3. There were little plots I really liked and the story was clever and a good preparation for the next Avengers. I also thought it was good to see Iron Man vulnerable, what are his weaknesses and what is it he does wrong. Or like he says: "I'm Tony Stark. I build neat stuff, got a great girl, occasionally save the world. So why can't I sleep?"

The story:
When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.

Overall: 8.5/10

Star Trek: Into Darkness
The last one, of which I know it didn't release in the Netherlands yet. (but I saw it about 3 weeks ago) Star Trek, everyone knows what it is, but I honestly have to see that I've never been a big Trekkie. I've only seen the recent film but nothing of the old series. I really enjoyed the first movie and was very excited to see Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, War Horse etc.) in this one. The trailers looked epic and I was definitely excited! But in the end, the only thing I can say about it that it was good! I wasn't impressed but enjoyed watching it. I would say, nothing special but definitely enjoyable. And yes, Benedict did do a great job as Khan.

The story:
After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

Overall: 7/10

There's a lot of movies coming up the next few months, so expect another post like this in the next few months!

  1. Place Beyond The Pines vond ik ook zo goed! Had veel weg van Drive en die is ook awesome :) The Host wil ik ook nog graag eens zien maar ben bang dat ik iets te hoge verwachtingen heb.

  4. I'd love to see Place Beyond The Pines, any movie with Ryan Gosling is good! I really liked Iron Man 3 too, and I agree with what you said about The Host. I still need to see the first Star Trek movie, but I'd really like to see the second one as well.

  8. Ik heb alleen the host gezien van de films in dit artikel en het boek heb ik niet gelezen, ik vond het op zich wel een leuke film maar niet echt heel bijzonder. Leuk artikel verder!
